UK Visa Guide

Got picked in the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot? Here’s what happens next.

If you were selected in the July 2026 India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS) ballot, being picked isn’t your visa — it’s an invitation to apply for one. You now have 90 days from your invitation email to submit your full application, pay your fees, and complete biometrics. Miss the window, and the invitation is forfeited with no appeal.

What you’ll need to do in the next 90 days

  • ✓ Hold £2,530 in your personal bank account continuously for 28 days
  • ✓ Gather your degree certificate, transcripts, and passport (6+ months validity)
  • ✓ Pay £1,892 total — £340 visa fee + £1,552 Immigration Health Surcharge
  • ✓ Complete identity verification — via the ID Check app or a Visa Application Centre appointment
  • ✓ Travel to the UK within 6 months of applying, once approved

90 days sounds like a lot — until you’re six weeks in, still waiting on a degree transcript, and realising your bank balance dipped for one day and reset your 28-day clock. Most people who miss this deadline don’t miss it from lack of time; they miss it from lack of sequencing.

Want the full week-by-week playbook?

Our YPS Visa Application Guide breaks the 90 days into weekly milestones, gives you the exact bank statement format UKVI expects, a full document checklist, and the most common reasons applications get delayed — so you’re not figuring it out under pressure.

Visa purposes covered

One visa. Many purposes.

The Standard Visitor Visa covers all of these — you do not need a separate visa for each purpose:

PurposeWhat’s AllowedMax Stay
TourismSightseeing, holidays, visiting friends and family6 months
BusinessMeetings, conferences, training — no paid UK work6 months
MedicalPrivate medical treatment in the UK6 months (extendable)
TransitPassing through UK to another country48 hours
⚠A Standard Visitor Visa does not allow paid or unpaid work, or study lasting more than 6 months. Breaching conditions leads to future visa bans.
Important 2026 change

UK eVisa — no more stickers.

From February 2026, the UK stopped issuing visa stickers in passports. All visas are now eVisas — digital permissions linked to your passport number and managed via your UKVI account.

💡What this means: When you arrive in the UK, border officers check your eVisa digitally. You do not show anything in your passport. Keep your UKVI account login details accessible during your trip.
What to prepare

Complete document checklist.

The Home Office doesn’t publish a fixed list — these are the documents that consistently produce approvals for Indian applicants, based on official guidance.

  • Valid PassportMinimum 6 months validity beyond your travel date. At least 2 blank pages. Must match all other documents exactly.
  • Cover LetterPurpose of visit, dates, itinerary, confirmation you will return to India. Our Complete tier includes a professionally structured, ready-to-edit template.
  • Bank Statements — Last 3–6 MonthsConsistent balance showing ability to fund your trip. Avoid sudden large deposits just before applying — a known flag for immigration officers.
  • Employment ProofSalaried: employer letter on letterhead + last 3 salary slips + leave approval. Self-employed: business registration + ITR 2–3 years.
  • Flight ItineraryConfirmed return flight booking. Dates must match exactly what you state in your online application form.
  • Accommodation ProofHotel bookings for all nights, or invitation letter if staying with someone in the UK (with their passport copy and proof of address).
  • Ties to IndiaProperty documents, dependent family, active employment. This is what demonstrates you will return home — the single most important thing the Home Office assesses.
  • Income Tax Returns — 2–3 YearsStrengthens financial proof. Essential for self-employed applicants. Salaried applicants benefit from including these too.
  • Prior Visa History (if any)Copies of previous US, Schengen, or Australian visas. Prior compliance with other countries meaningfully strengthens a UK application.
💡The key question the Home Office asks: Will this person leave the UK when their visa expires? Every document you submit should answer that question with evidence.
Why applications fail

Common refusal reasons.

Refusal ReasonHow to Fix It
Weak financial proof3–6 months consistent balance. No sudden deposits. Include ITR alongside statements.
Vague cover letterBe specific — exact dates, named places to visit, clear itinerary. Generic letters are an immediate red flag.
Weak ties to IndiaInclude property documents, dependent family evidence, employer leave approval letter.
Inconsistent informationEvery date, name, and figure across all documents must match exactly. One mismatch can cause refusal.
Unclear purposeState clearly whether you are visiting as a tourist, for business, or to see family — and provide matching documents for each.
Step by step

How to apply from India.

Apply online up to 3 months before your intended travel date. The process is fully self-serve — no agent or consultant required.

01

Apply online at gov.uk

Go to gov.uk/standard-visitor-visa. Create or log into your UKVI account and complete the online application. Answer all questions about travel history, finances, and purpose of visit.

02

Pay the visa fee

£135 for standard 6-month visa (from 8 April 2026). Priority ~£250. Super Priority ~£800. Pay online by credit or debit card at time of application.

03

Book your VFS Global appointment

After submitting online, book an appointment at your nearest VFS Global centre in India. You must attend in person to provide biometrics — fingerprints and a photograph. Takes approximately 20 minutes.

04

Upload or submit supporting documents

Upload documents via the UKVI online portal before your appointment, or bring physical copies to VFS. All documents must be in English or certified translation.

05

Wait for the decision

Home Office targets a decision within 3 weeks for standard service. You receive an email when a decision is made. Check your eVisa status via your UKVI account — no passport sticker is issued from February 2026.

06

Travel to the UK

Your eVisa is linked to your passport number. UK Border Force checks it digitally on arrival. Keep your UKVI account login accessible during your trip.

Common questions

Everything you want to know.

  • The Home Office does not state a specific minimum. The assessment is whether your balance covers your trip costs and shows you can support yourself without working. For a 2-week trip, most successful applicants show ₹3–5 lakh consistently over 3–6 months. Avoid sudden large deposits immediately before applying — this is a known flag.
  • Yes. UK Standard Visitor Visas are available as 6-month (£135), 2-year (£432), 5-year (£771), or 10-year (£963) multiple entry. Longer validity means you can travel multiple times without reapplying. A strong travel history and financial profile helps when applying for multi-year visas as a first-time UK visitor.
  • From February 2026, the UK stopped issuing visa stickers in passports. All visas are now digital permissions (eVisas) linked to your passport number. You access your eVisa via your UKVI account at gov.uk. UK Border Force checks it digitally when you arrive — you do not need to show a sticker or physical document.
  • Yes — there is no mandatory waiting period after a UK visa refusal. However, reapplying immediately with the same documents will almost certainly result in another refusal. Read your refusal letter carefully and address the specific reason stated. Our Premium tier includes a full refusal decision guide.
  • Travel insurance is not a mandatory requirement for the UK visitor visa — unlike Schengen. However, it is strongly recommended. Healthcare in the UK is expensive for visitors not covered by the NHS. Some officers view insurance positively as evidence of preparation and intent to return.
  • Only in exceptional circumstances — for example, a serious illness preventing travel. Extensions are not routinely granted and must be applied for before your permission expires. Overstaying your UK visa has serious consequences including a ban on future applications.
  • No. ApnaAbroad guides are independent editorial resources compiled from official government sources (gov.uk, Home Office). We are not affiliated with the UK government, UKVI, or VFS Global. You submit your application directly to the UK government — we give you the guide, templates, and checklists to do it well, without paying a ₹75,000 agent fee.
