How to Write a UK Visa Cover Letter — Guide for Indians
The cover letter is the most underestimated document in a UK visa application. Most Indian applicants write one line — “I wish to visit the UK for tourism purposes” — and wonder why they get refused. A well-written cover letter is your single direct communication with the Entry Clearance Officer. Use it.
What Is a UK Visa Cover Letter?
A cover letter (sometimes called a personal letter or supporting letter) is a document you write yourself that explains your trip to the UK, your financial means, your ties to India, and your travel history. It is submitted alongside your supporting documents at your VFS appointment. It is not mandatory — but in practice, applications without a cover letter are weaker and more likely to be refused because the ECO has no context for the documents they are reviewing.
What Entry Clearance Officers Actually Look For
ECOs process hundreds of applications per day. They are looking for three things in a cover letter: specificity (does this person actually have a plan?), consistency (does this letter match the documents submitted?), and credibility (does this person have a genuine reason to return to India?). A vague letter with no specific plans and no mention of ties to India signals a weak application.
The 5-Paragraph Structure
Paragraph 1: Purpose of Visit
Be specific. Instead of “I want to visit the UK for tourism,” write: “I am planning a 12-day trip to London and Edinburgh from 15 June to 26 June 2026. I intend to visit the British Museum, the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle, and the Royal Mile. I have booked accommodation at Premier Inn London Waterloo for 8 nights and The Grassmarket Hotel in Edinburgh for 4 nights.” Reference your bookings by name.
Paragraph 2: Financial Means
State clearly who is funding the trip and reference your documents: “I will fund this visit from my personal savings. My HDFC Bank account (ending XXXX) currently holds INR 4,20,000, as evidenced by the 6-month statements enclosed. My annual income is INR 8,40,000, as shown in my ITR for FY 2024-25.”
Paragraph 3: Ties to India
This paragraph is the most important. Name your specific ties: “I am permanently employed as Senior Software Engineer at Infosys BPM Limited, Hyderabad, where I have worked for 4 years. My employer has confirmed my leave from 14 June to 27 June and I am expected to return to work on 28 June. My spouse and two children reside with me at our owned property in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. Property documents are enclosed.”
Paragraph 4: Travel History
If you have travelled internationally before, mention it briefly: “I have previously visited Dubai (2022, 2024), Singapore (2023), and Thailand (2024). On each occasion I returned to India in compliance with the respective visa conditions.” If this is your first international trip, simply omit this paragraph.
Paragraph 5: Declaration
A brief, professional close: “I confirm that I will depart the UK before my visa expires and will not seek employment or public funds during my visit. I am happy to provide any additional information required.”
Common Cover Letter Mistakes
The mistakes that weaken cover letters most consistently are: using agent-written template language that sounds obviously generic, vague itineraries with no specific places or dates, not referencing your supporting documents, mentioning relatives in the UK without explaining their status, writing more than 2 pages, and making emotional appeals instead of factual statements.
Length and Format
One to two pages maximum. Typed, not handwritten. Use a professional font and normal margins. Print and sign it. Include your full name, address, date, and contact details at the top.
Reapplication After Refusal
If you are reapplying after a previous refusal, your cover letter must acknowledge the refusal directly and explain what has changed: “My previous application was refused in August 2022. At that time, I had only 3 months of employment history at my current employer. I now have 4 years of continuous employment. I believe my current application addresses all concerns that led to the previous decision.”
